Herbert slumped onto the sofa, remote in hand. Margot sighed, placing a stack of bills on the coffee table.
"Herbert, Oakhaven Industries called. They said you need to resume your safety inspections, not just 'inspect' the break room donut selection."
Herbert grumbled. "But those jelly-filled donuts require *thorough* inspection, Margot. It's a vital public service!"
Margot rolled her eyes. "Speaking of vital services, Mrs. Higgins needs someone to foster her cat for a week while she visits her sister. I said we'd do it."
Herbert's eyes widened. "A cat? In *my* house? Absolutely not! It'll shed all over my recliner!"
"Herbert! We can't just abandon Mrs. Higgins. Besides, she said she'd oblige us with some of her famous apple pie as a thank you."
Herbert considered this, stroking his chin. "Apple pie, you say? Well..."
"And I was thinking of asking Brian to upgrade the guest room. Turn it into a proper foster-animal-friendly space.
"Brian?!", exclaimed Herbert, "He's likely to turn it into a skateboarding ramp!"
Just then, a news report flashed on the television: "Local convict escapes from Oakhaven Penitentiary! Citizens urged to lock doors."
Herbert stared at the screen, then back at Margot. "A cat *and* a convict on the loose? Maybe I *should* focus on those safety inspections at the donut shop! It's safer there!"
