Margot carefully placed a box on the table. "Herbert, be careful with this. It's extremely fragile."

Herbert, peering inside, asked, "What is it? Some kind of fancy lamp?"

"Worse," Margot sighed. "It's Great Aunt Mildred's porcelain cat collection. She left it to us."

Herbert chuckled. "Oh, great. Just what we needed. More dust collectors."

Later that day, Brian, home from Oakhaven Elementary, was attempting a particularly ambitious skateboard trick in the living room. He leaped, he flailed, and his skateboard went careening toward the table.

CRASH!

Margot rushed in, her face a mask of controlled panic. "Brian! What have you done?"

Brian stared at the scattered porcelain shards, a look of pure embarrassment washing over him. "I... I slipped?"

Herbert, emerging from his afternoon nap, surveyed the scene. "Well, that's just great," he muttered. "Now we have a million tiny pieces of fragile cat."

Laura, a first-year undergraduate at the state university, arrived home for the weekend and found her mother meticulously trying to piece one of the cats back together.

"Mom, what happened?" Laura asked, noticing the forlorn look on Margot's face.

Margot explained the story, ending with, "Now I have to write a lengthy thank you note to Aunt Mildred's lawyer, while also explaining how 'the cats are adjusting well to their new home'."

Laura sighed, patting her mother's shoulder. "I'm sure you'll figure it out, Mom. Maybe you can find a mentor in pottery reconstruction to help."

Herbert, munching on a donut, added, "Or we could just say they ran away. To a farm."

Margot glared at Herbert. "No, Herbert. We are going to fix these cats. One way or another."

Brian walked up to Margot. "Sorry, Mum. I will pay for new cats with my own pocket money."
