Herbert slumped onto the sofa, a half-eaten donut in hand. "Rough day, eh, Herb?" Margot asked, entering the living room.
"You have no idea," Herbert groaned. "Old man Fitzwilliam wants to congratulate me on 'five years of dedicated safety inspections.' Dedicated! I've spent most of that time trying to avoid actual work!"
Margot sighed. "Well, try to look pleased. We're going out for dinner to celebrate."
Later that evening, at The Dog & Duck, Herbert was uncharacteristically quiet.
"What's wrong, Herbert? You haven't touched your fish and chips," Margot observed.
Herbert hesitated, then blurted out, "I have a confession to make." He fidgeted with his napkin. "Remember that 'missing' chunk of cheese from the fridge?"
Margot narrowed her eyes. "The one I blamed on Brian? The one that was a good size?"
Herbert nodded miserably. "That was me. I ate it. I was stressed at work."
Margot stared at him, then started to laugh. "Herbert! You're incorrigible!"
"It gets worse!" Herbert exclaimed, "Fitzwilliam cornered me and asked me to recount every safety violation I've ever reported! I made half of them up to meet my quota!"
Margot choked on her drink. "You did what?"
"I panicked!" Herbert said. "I thought, if I admitted the truth, it would set a terrible precedent. Every safety inspector would be under scrutiny!"
Margot shook her head, still chuckling. "Only you, Herbert. Only you."
"So, no dessert then?" Herbert asked hopefully. Margot just rolled her eyes.
