Herbert sat at the kitchen table, a half-eaten donut in his hand. Margot was reading the newspaper. "Margot," he said, "I think I've got a great idea!"

Margot lowered the newspaper slightly. "Oh? Another one? Is it going to manufacture money from thin air again, like that last scheme?"

"No, no, this is different! It's about fairness. Equal pay for equal work!"

Margot sighed. "Herbert, you're a safety inspector. What are you talking about?"

"Well, Brian thinks his allowance is too small. He says his chores, plus homework, are worth more! So, I'm thinking of an investigation. A chore audit!"

Margot put down her newspaper. "An investigation? Herbert, he's ten. You're going to 'investigate' whether he deserves an extra dollar?"

Brian walked into the kitchen, skateboard in hand. "Did someone say 'investigation'? Are you finally going to find out who ate the last cookie?"

Herbert ignored Brian. "I need to enable him to see the value of work!" He took another bite of his donut.

Margot shook her head. "You�?Tre going to 'enable' him by doing a chore audit? Honestly, Herbert. Just give him an extra fifty cents."

"No, Margot! This is about principles!" Herbert declared.

Later that day, Margot found Herbert napping on the couch. Brian was outside, skateboarding. Margot just sighed and picked up Herbert's newspaper.
