There is / There are: Introduzione

Usiamo There is e There are per parlare dell'esistenza di qualcosa in un luogo.

In italiano, questo si traduce spesso con 'c'è' o 'ci sono'.

There is: Forma e Uso

Usiamo There is quando parliamo di una cosa singolare (una sola).

Esempio:

• There is a book on the desk. (C'è un libro sulla scrivania.)

Possiamo anche usare There is con sostantivi non numerabili (come 'milk' o 'water').

Esempio:

• There is some milk in the fridge. (C'è del latte nel frigorifero.)

There are: Forma e Uso

Usiamo There are quando parliamo di cose plurali (più di una).

Esempio:

• There are two chairs in the room. (Ci sono due sedie nella stanza.)

Forma Negativa

Per formare la frase negativa, aggiungiamo not.

• There is not diventa There isn't (forma contratta).
• There are not diventa There aren't (forma contratta).

Esempi:

• There isn't a car in the garage. (Non c'è una macchina nel garage.)
• There aren't any apples in the basket. (Non ci sono mele nel cesto.)

Forma Interrogativa

Per formare la domanda, invertiamo l'ordine di is/are e there.

• Is there...?
• Are there...?

Esempi:

• Is there a cat in the house? (C'è un gatto in casa?)
• Are there any cookies in the jar? (Ci sono biscotti nel barattolo?)

There is / There are sono utili per indicare cosa esiste o non esiste in un determinato luogo.

Ricorda: There is per il singolare e non numerabile, There are per il plurale.
